Meet the executive team for UoA Scientific for 2023 - we’re all so excited to be bringing you science communication content! While we all share a passion for science and sharing it with the world, we’re also all a bit different in our disciplines and roles.
Read on to get to know us a little better :)
The Exec
Jasmine | President
Jasmine is a third-stage undergraduate student working towards a Bachelor of Advanced Science majoring in Ecology. This year she is also part of the stage 3 Science Scholars programme. Jasmine is interested in marine ecology, native restoration ecology, and conservation biology. Currently, she is working at Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research as a summer student lab technician.
Milly| Vice-President
Milly is the Vice-President of Scientific for 2023. She is in her Honours year of the Bachelor of Advanced Sciences (Hons) in cognitive neuroscience. In 2022 she completed a dissertation in MRI software and MCI (a precursor of Alzheimer’s Disease), and will be working in stroke rehabilitation for her Honours project. She is passionate about health inequities, accessible scientific knowledge, and anything to do with the brain.
Els | Secretary
Els is the newly appointed secretary/treasurer. She is currently a third-year student studying a BCom/BSc majoring in Biotechnology and Accounting. Her main interests include utilising science to apply more sustainable alternative innovations and technologies into our society.
Sarah | Head Editor
Sarah is Scientific’s head editor for 2023. She has just finished her BSc in biochemistry and cell biology. However, she is continuing her study over the summer as a research scholarship student looking at mesenchymal stem cells in umbilical cords. When she’s not in the lab you’ll find her at the beach or on a hike.
Gene is doing his Honours in cognitive neuroscience. He is interested in visual neuroscience, especially retinotopic mapping, colour, and eye movements. He’s also working with Auckland Bioengieering Institute on a project involving brain atlas construction using dMRI.

Noor | Head of Outreach
Noor is the head of outreach for 2023. She is currently working towards her Bachelor of Science in biomedical science, specialising in immunology and cancer biology.
Nargiss is part of the writing coordination team for 2023. With her Green Chemical Science background, she has motivation to make meaningful scientific contributions that inspire sustainable change in the environment using chemistry. She is passionate about anthropogenic contaminants like nanoplastics and understanding their influence on our environment.

Lucas is currently an MBChB Part II student. His passion lies in tackling health challenges and improving health outcomes through the intersection of medicine, biotechnology, and venture building.

Kevan is a writing coordinator for the Scientific. He is currently working towards a BA/BSc with a major in Mathematics and looks forward to exploring postgraduate options in the field.
Kevan | Writing Coordinator
Rahma will be an outreach officer for Scientific 2023. She is currently a third-year BSc student doing a double major in Biological Science (genetics pathway) and Computer Science. She enjoys exploring her options and is currently working as a tutor and a Quality Assurance tester intern at the IT services department at the University of Auckland.

Cindy is currently doing her Honours in Chemistry. Her interests lie in all things sustainability, particularly in the field of green chemistry, with the aim to provide innovative solutions to global sustainability problems.
Cindy | Creative Officer
Shyla is currently completing her conjoint degree in Law and Biotechnology. She aims to combine her interests in environmental microbiology, IP law and science communication to enter the world of biotech innovation.
Shyla| Social Media Officer
Aimee is a Creative Officer and the resident illustrator for the Scientific. She is a fourth-year BA/BSc student majoring in Physics and has previously researched in optics, microfluidics, and physical acoustics projects. In 2023 she will be on exchange at the University of California, Los Angeles.
